OSA and Sleep Apnoea Therapy

Since 2016 in the UK, the world of sleep apnoea therapy and CPAP machines has been dominated by the Philips Respironics DreamStation. With incredible technical features, competitive pricing and the Philips brand name. The Dreamstation has been no1 in the private sector and supplied extensively by the NHS for OSA treatment for the last five years. Philips is a massive manufacturer of many electronic products and a recognised brand worldwide. The Dreamstation was the next level of therapy for OSA over their previous CPAP machine, the System One REMstar 60.

Philips Respironics DreamStation recall

Unfortunately, in 2021 a medical device field notice was released by Philips Respironics informing us of a possible health risk from exposure to degraded sound abatement foam used within their machine. Philips: Medical Device Field Safety Notice (Outside of US)

What does this mean to the people using their CPAP machine?

Essentially it’s a recall and a halt of supply and sale of the DreamStation for the foreseeable future. There will be a DreamStation 2 (DS2), but it probably won’t be released until 2023.

List of recalled Philips CPAP machines and ventilators

  • E30 (Emergency Use Authorization)
  • DreamStation ASV.
  • DreamStation ST, AVAPS.
  • SystemOne ASV4.
  • C Series ASV, S/T, AVAPS.
  • OmniLab Advanced Plus In-Lab Titration Device.
  • SystemOne (Q series)
  • DreamStation CPAP, Auto CPAP, BiPAP.

Is there a shortage of CPAP machines?

The short answer is yes.

The current covid global pandemic has affected many electronic products’ production and subsequent supply. Everything that needs a chip is scarce, from the Playstation 5, new cars and CPAP machines.

Plus, the Philips recall has now removed the most popular machine in the UK.

Are there alternatives to the Philips DreamStation?

The S.Box is also an automatic CPAP machine (like the DreamStation) and will provide you with the appropriate amount of pressure at all times. When you’re not experiencing Sleep Apnoea, the pressure will be low and only increase when you’re at risk of having your sleep interrupted to fend off any potential blockages.

The Sefam S.Box is competitively priced at £549 and can be supplied with a CPAP humidifier attachment at £149. Sleek, stylish, compact and available now.
